Fitzroy Crossing and Geikie Gorge Cruise, the best example of Devonian Reef in the Kimberley and Travel to Kununurra - Day 5 and Day 6 of our Tour

Before leaving Derby this morning we visit the Norval Art Gallery. This gallery is run by the Kimberley artists Mark and Mary. You will find amazing artwork here including a wonderful and unique collection of carved boab tree nuts. We are now on our way to Fitzroy Crossing. Here we will explore Geikie Gorge which was formed by the Fitzroy River and the level of the river during the Kimberley wet season can rise by up to 16.5 metres. The limestone walls where originally formed by a coral reef, algae and lime secreting organisms that are now extinct. The remains of the reef now stand up to 100 metres above the plains as the mighty Fitzroy courses through them. Geikie Gorge is the best example of the Devonian time, and we will take a fabulous cruise exploring the wonderful gorge and natural habitat of freshwater crocodiles. There is time for a refreshing swim in the Fitzroy River before our short journey to our accommodation for tonight.

(Day 5 Fitzroy River Lodge En-suited Safari Tents or Motel Rooms depending on departure date, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Sit back and enjoy the drive as we travel through open grasslands and vast floodplains towards Kununurra. On route we stop in Halls Creek at one of the best information centres in the area. Continue your journey onto Kununurra located on the eastern edge of the Kimberley and home to plantations of sandalwood, mangoes, citrus, chia, and melons. Upon arrival we check into our apartments for the next four nights. There is time for a walk to the local lagoon surrounded by boab trees and home to an array of birds. Watch the sunset before joining back for dinner.

Bungle Bungle National Park with walks to Cathedral Gorge and Beehive Domes, Mitchell Falls Plateau and Mitchell Falls - Day 7 and Day 8 Tour Highlights

The Kimberley region is home to one of the most recognized features – the Purnululu National Park also known as the Bungle Bungles. Purnululu means “sandstone” a name given to the area by the traditional owners of the land the Kitja people. The park is accessible by air or along an exceedingly long and unforgiving 4WD track. This morning we board our plane to this incredible and world heritage listed National Park.

The flight path takes us over the Bungle Bungle Range, Lake Argyle, the Argyle Diamond Mine, and the Ord River Irrigation Area. In addition, you are going to see the stunning Carr Boyd Ranges, Osmond Ranges, the Ord River, and Bow River before landing at the remote unsealed Bellburn Airstrip. From here we take a short 4WD bus ride to explore this unique National Park. Our 3km guided walk takes us along the bed of Piccaninny Creek and amongst the unusual beehive striped domes. Alternating in orange and grey bands some of the domes reach peaks of 578 metres above sea level. The tour takes you into Cathedral Gorge a large natural amphitheatre. Sit on the rock ledges, listen to the acoustics, marvel at the stunning cliffs, and absorb the atmosphere.

After the completion of our walk, you can take in the sheer magnitude of Purnululu National Park with an optional 18-minute scenic helicopter flight. Helicopters can fly much lower and you have a much closer look at the breath-taking Bungle Bungle Range and the spectacular Piccaninny Gorge. We all return to Bellburn Airstrip and depart this World Heritage Area of the Kimberley by plane to Kununurra. Our day in the Bungle Bungles is sure to be one of the many highlights on our Kimberley Tours.

(Day 7 Kununurra 4.5 Star Freshwater Apartments, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

The Mitchell Plateau and the Mitchell Falls are iconic landmarks of the Kimberley, and we travel in comfort and style to witness this incredible area. Fly over the beautifully patterned mudflats near Wyndham, the magnificent King River, Berkeley River Gorge, King George Falls, and Kalumburu to the remote Mitchell Plateau Airstrip.

A beautiful moderate 4.5-kilometer hike is ahead of us, and all fit travellers are starting the Mitchell Falls walk from the airstrip. This can be challenging at points, with uneven tracks and river crossings, in full sun and most likely very warm temperatures. It is only recommended to the fit and experienced walker. All non-walkers are transferred by helicopter straight from the airstrip to the top of the falls and have extra time at the Mitchell Falls. Marvel at their beauty and take a swim in the Mitchell River above the Falls. Admire the fascinating flora and fauna of this area and enjoy a fresh picnic-style lunch. The only way down is by helicopter, and we all take a very short trip from the top of the Falls back to the Mitchell Plateau airstrip. We pass over El Questro, Home Valley Station and the Cockburn Range on our return flight path before touching down in Kununurra.

(Day 8 Kununurra 4.5 Star Freshwater Apartments, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Many thanks,

I wanted to take a little time to reflect on our recent trip from Broome to Kununurra. A friend asked us how our trip went. I replies “One of the best trips we have ever done.” We enjoyed our few days in Broome then set off on the trip of a lifetime. The way you, Flick , ran the trip was nothing short of amazing. And the work you, Dianna, did all through the Covid ups and downs , to look after us all was first rate. And we finally got to go on this fabulous trip. Every day was so well organised , right down to the showing of Australia. And the knowledge that continually poured out of your brain, Flick, was first rate. The word of the trip had to be “WOW”. Everywhere we went was another WOW. And even though it was the luck of the draw, we really lucked out with the other 14 on our trip. What fabulous people they are. Some of us are looking at doing the Kimberley from the water together sometime. Thank you seems to be no where near enough for what the both of you have given us. But that is the best I can do. Thank you so much
Bev and Peter

Such a lot has happened since the email re the pick-up time -but I wish it was all about to start again! What a fantastic trip you all organised–ran like clockwork from start to finish, & everything so good & enjoyable.  The Kimberley are so beautiful  –colours, rocks, mountain ranges–I was amazed & continually thrilled to be there. Flick–you do a wonderful job–organisation, careful driving, food, accommodation –all so well done–& handling the repeated questions with great patience. We were all impressed that you are doing this another 3+ times. Rita–what fun we had –you were great on the trip as you are ‘molto gentile”–Flick will of course survive without you–but its nice to have someone standing by. Your trip to Italia will be so good for you–but I doubt if it could be better than what we’ve just had. Diana–you missed out on hearing your praises sung! Everyone was most impressed with what you do behind the scenes–& said so–we all thought we may meet at the yacht club –but times didn’t work out. You & Flick have a great thing going eg everyone was studying the brochures on other trips–I’m sure you’ll hear from many of us again! This trip was unique–we were fortunate in having such a lovely group to travel with–all very nice, & kind–it was lovely for me! Again-what a great trip–what springs to mind now is the Derby Sunset,on the pier, G&T……
With gratitude to you all

Ian
