Kimberley Tours Day 1 to 2 Highlights - Kununurra Diversion Dam, Zebra Rock Gallery, Mirima National Park and the Bungle Bungles with Cathedral Gorge, Flight and Walk

Welcome on board on one of our fabulous Kimberley Tours departing from Kununurra, located on the eastern edge of the Kimberley and home to plantations of sandalwood, mangoes, citrus, chia, and melons. Arrive by plane from your hometown before 12noon and our journey starts with a visit to the Diversion Dam an engineer’s delight. The 20 radial gate structure was built to contain the flow of water from Lake Argyle. Our next stop takes us to the Zebra Rock Gallery for a very informative talk with showcasing of special rocks. Geologists are yet to determine its origin but know it all evolved 600 million years ago. A great place to buy a beautiful souvenir.

For lunch we drive to the Hoochery Distillery the makers of the finest Rum in the West and a place of genuine hospitality. Enjoy a delicious Hoochery Café lunch before tasting award winning rum, whiskey, or coffee liqueur. If spirits are not to your liking, why not try the mouth-melting homemade ice cream. We then head over to the local Sandalwood Factory, a great place to learn, smell and buy some terrific gifts for family and friends or treat yourself with a pure Australian Sandalwood product. Mid-afternoon we take a short walk in the Mirima National Park. It is known as the Hidden Valley National Park or the Mini Bungle Bungles with its 350-million-year-old rock formations. See some rock art and enjoy the views from the lookout.

(Day 1 Kununurra, 4.5 Star Freshwater Apartments, Lunch, Tastings, Dinner)

The Kimberley region is home to one of the most recognized features – the Purnululu National Park also known as the Bungle Bungles. Purnululu means “sandstone” a name given to the area by the traditional owners of the land the Kitja people. The park is accessible by air or along an exceedingly long and unforgiving 4WD track. This morning we board our plane to this incredible and world heritage listed National Park. The flight path takes us over the Bungle Bungle Range, Lake Argyle, the Argyle Diamond Mine, and the Ord River Irrigation Area. In addition, you are going to see the stunning Carr Boyd Ranges, Osmond Ranges, the Ord River, and Bow River before landing at the remote unsealed Bellburn Airstrip.

From here we take a short 4WD bus ride to explore this unique National Park. Our 3km guided walk takes us along the bed of Piccaninny Creek and amongst the unusual beehive striped domes. Alternating in orange and grey bands some of the domes reach peaks of 578 metres above sea level. The tour takes you into Cathedral Gorge a large natural amphitheatre. Sit on the rock ledges, listen to the acoustics, marvel at the stunning cliffs, and absorb the atmosphere. After the completion of our walk, you can take in the sheer magnitude of Purnululu National Park with an optional 18-minute scenic helicopter flight. Helicopters can fly much lower and you have a much closer look at the breath-taking Bungle Bungle Range and the spectacular Piccaninny Gorge. We all return to Bellburn Airstrip and depart this World Heritage Area of the Kimberley by plane to Kununurra. Our day in the Bungle Bungles is sure to be one of the many highlights on our Kimberley Tours.

(Day 2 Kununurra 4.5 Star Freshwater Apartments, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Kimberley Tours Day 3 to 5 Highlights - Mitchell Plateau and Falls with Flight, Walk or Helicopter, Ord River Cruise, Durack Homestead and Lake Kununurra Dinner Cruise

The Mitchell Plateau and the Mitchell Falls are iconic landmarks of the Kimberley, and we travel in comfort and style to witness this incredible area. Fly over the beautifully patterned mudflats near Wyndham, the magnificent King River, Berkeley River Gorge, King George Falls, and Kalumburu to the remote Mitchell Plateau Airstrip.

A beautiful moderate 4.5-kilometer hike is ahead of us, and all fit travellers are starting the Mitchell Falls walk from the airstrip. This can be challenging at points, with uneven tracks and river crossings, in full sun and very warm temperatures. It is only recommended to the fit and experienced walker. All non-walkers are transferred by helicopter straight from the airstrip to the top of the falls and have extra time at the Mitchell Falls. Marvel at their beauty and take a swim in the Mitchell River above the Falls. Admire the fascinating flora and fauna of this area and enjoy a fresh picnic-style lunch. The only way down is by helicopter, and we all take a very short trip from the top of the Falls back to the Mitchell Plateau airstrip. We pass over El Questro, Home Valley Station and the Cockburn Range on our return flight path before touching down in Kununurra.

(Day 3 Kununurra 4.5 Star Freshwater Apartments, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

The Kimberley region is home to an array of wonderful landscapes and another full day of stunning scenery awaits us on our tour today. We travel 55 kilometres by boat up the spectacular Ord River marvelling at an array of birds, other native wildlife, and flora. A buffet lunch awaits us at a riverside camp before continuing our cruising journey to the top dam and Lake Argyle township. We change the mode of transport and board our coach for a drive across the Ord Top Dam and a scenic lookout for fabulous views of the enormous Lake Argyle.

As we leave Lake Argyle, we stop at the historic Durack Homestead Museum which is dedicated to the pioneering spirit of the Durack Family. Originally the homestead was built at Argyle Downs Station before it was dismantled and rebuilt in its new location preventing it to drown in Lake Argyle’s waters. Back in Kununurra we embark on a dinner sunset cruise on Lake Kununurra. Sit back and relax on the MV Jabiru as we wind through Lily Creek. View the Sleeping Buddha, the Diversion Dam and fantastic birdlife – a perfect way to end a fabulous day in the Kimberley.

(Day 4 Kununurra 4.5 Star Freshwater Apartments, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Today we travel through open grasslands and vast floodplains towards Fitzroy Crossing. On route we stop in Halls Creek at one of the best information centres in the area. Finally, we make our way to Fitzroy River Lodge, check in and join back for a delicious group dinner.

(Day 5 Fitzroy River Lodge En-suited Safari Tents or Motel Rooms depending on departure date, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Kimberley Tours Day 6 and 7 Highlights - Geikie Gorge a Devonian Delight, Derby, Horizontal Falls Flight, Boat Ride and Buccaneer Archipelago

After some early starts, enjoy a leisurely morning and full breakfast today. Geikie Gorge was formed by the Fitzroy River and the level of the river during the Kimberley wet season can rise by up to 16.5 metres. The limestone walls where originally formed by a coral reef, algae and lime secreting organisms that are now extinct. Therefore, the remains of the reef now stand up to 100 metres above the plains as the mighty Fitzroy courses through them. Geikie Gorge is the best example of the Devonian time, and we will take a fabulous cruise exploring the wonderful gorge and natural habitat of freshwater crocodiles. We continue our journey to Derby, a town in the West Kimberley with the largest tidal movements in the southern hemisphere. Upon arrival we visit the Norval Art Gallery. This gallery is run by the Kimberley artists Mark and Mary. You will find amazing artwork here including a wonderful and unique collection of carved boab tree nuts.

After our hotel check in we make our way to the famous Boab Prison Tree, which is believed to be over 1,500 years old. Not far from here, you can see the historic water trough which could water 500 bullocks at a time without running dry. Derby is located on the edge of the King Sound with the highest tides of any Australian port. The beaches are not golden silky sand but mudflats, mangroves, and swamps. We set up our deck chairs for sunset at the Derby jetty and click away at the rush of the tidal water coming in. At dinner we talk about our big and exciting day ahead.

(Day 6 Derby 4 Star Spinifex Hotel, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

A fabulous day is awaiting us today. Step on board a turbo prop seaplane and enjoy a morning flight directly to the Horizontal Falls. Experience the thrill of riding through the falls on the fastest boat in the Kimberley. With our heart rate back to normal we cruise through the spectacular untouched surrounding bays and creeks. We have lunch on board a fixed luxury vessel, followed by a swim in the croc and shark free cage. We will discover that time really does slowdown in the Kimberley.

After lunch we will head back out to see the tidal changes at the Horizontal Falls. With cameras ready for stunning photographs, we take a low-level scenic flight over the Buccaneer Archipelago and King Sound as we return to Derby. Enjoy some down time in Derby or join your guide to the Wharfinger Museum for some displays and history of the region or do a little shopping or how about writing some traditional postcards.

(Day 7 Derby 4 Star Spinifex Hotel, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) *Please note, that passengers need to be below 120 kg to participate in the Horizontal Falls Day.

Kimberley Tours Day 8 and Day 9 Highlights - Broome, Malcolm Douglas Croc Park, Roebuck Bay Eco-Sunset Cruise, Dampier Peninsula with Beagle Bay, Cygnet Bay Sea Safari and Return Flight over Cape Leveque to Broome

We leave Derby and travel to Broome, only a 2-hour drive away. On route we stop at the Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park. The park is a refuge home to some of the most dangerous crocs and was a dream come true for Malcom Douglas who produced famous adventure and documentary films for over 40 years.

Before lunch we have time for a stop at town beach and jetty in Broome. The newly opened jetty is 112 metres in length and provides fabulous views of mud flats at low tide or turquoise blue water at high tide. Mid-afternoon we head out on a sunset eco-cruise along Gantheaume Point, Reddell Beach, Entrance Point and Roebuck Bay. Get firsthand information about the biodiversity of flora and fauna from an on-board marine biologist and discover historical sites and landmarks of Broome. Finish the day with a spectacular sunset on the water.

(Day 8 Broome Hotel, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Today we explore the Dampier Peninsula including a Sea Safari from Cygnet Bay and a flight over the northern most part of the Kimberley, Cape Leveque. Our early morning starts with a drive out to Beagle Bay Aboriginal Community and a visit to the Sacred Heart Church with its wonderful pearl and shell altar, often referred to as the Mother of Pearl. We continue our journey to Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm, the oldest continuously working pearl farm in Australia. Take part in an informative tour before lunch at the local Cygnet Bay Restaurant.

We then board a high-speed vessel for a spectacular cruise along the Kimberley Coast. Depending on tides our cruise takes us through the Sunday Island group of the Buccaneer Archipelago showcasing a tidal display of whirlpools and standing waves. At low tides experience the inter-tidal zones of the stunning and the deserted ‘thousands of islands’ as we cruise to Pearl Passage, a fault line on the edge of the Canning Basin. After a fabulous day exploring the Dampier Peninsula, we enjoy the luxury of a short return flight from One Arm Point to Broome. Marvel at the red rock lined coastline of Cape Leveque, Beagle Bay, Willie Creek, and Cable Beach. We arrive around 5pm with time for a dip in the hotel pool before dinner.

(Day 9 Broome Hotel, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Kimberley Tours Day 10 Highlights - Broome Gantheaume Point, Japanese Cementery, Pearl Lugger Tour, Matso's Brewery

Enjoy a well-earned sleep and leisurely morning. We depart at 9am and drive out to Gantheaume Point in Broome. The deep red pindan cliffs surrounded by turquoise ocean waters are a fantastic photographers delight. You may even spot the Osprey nesting here every year. Our next stop takes us to the Japanese Cemetery. You may think it is not a place to go to while on a holiday. However, this cemetery is really something else with its beautiful headstones and interesting history it is stunning in its own rights.

Back into town we are booked for the Pearl Luggers Tour. Different to our pearl experience from yesterday we learn about the pearl industry and the great history that goes with it. Discover how the regions rare Australian pearl is produced and check out the stunning display of pearls and gifts in the showroom. Our Kimberley Tour is coming to an end with a tasting of locally brewed beer and a group lunch at Matso’s Brewery. We say our goodbyes and you have the choice of being dropped off back at our hotel or at Cable Beach by 2.30pm for an afternoon stroll, perhaps a sunset camel ride and dinner.

(Day 10 Broome Hotel, Breakfast and Lunch)

Night 10 with breakfast is included in your tour package. Fly home at any time the day after tour finish.

Thank you so much, we had a wonderful Kimberley tour with all of you. We have been singing your praises and hope to do another tour with you at some stage. It is difficult to select a highlight as it is all so amazing, but would have to say Horizontal Falls, Helicopter Flight and Ord River would top the list. We cannot omit the wonderful hospitality and great lunches, along with all the little extras.

I am very grateful I was able to join the group. I’ll see you when I’m looking at you!!

My 10 day tour to the Kimberley was amazing. Everything met & exceeded expectations – the itinerary, the sights, the people we met along the way, the food (yum & so much variety), the accommodation and Flick who did a fantastic job as tour guide & driver. Nothing was too much trouble for her. I had a great group of companions on the tour and am looking forward to my next trip. Thank you again.
