Arrival into Birdsville, Enjoy the Birdsville Cup, Musical Entertainment and Big Red, the Edge of the Simpson Desert Day 4 to 5

Whether it is the Birdsville Races, the boxing, the big red sand hills of the Simpson Desert or the atmosphere that draws us to Birdsville, this iconic town has truly made a mark in Australian history. We depart Innamincka by 9am and fly north. The excitement grows as we near Birdsville, located on the banks of the Diamantina River. Arrive mid-morning and settle in for a legendary event you will never forget.  Once we have checked in at Tent City, we will head west out of town to the outskirts of Big Red, the first of many sand dunes when crossing the desert land between Birdsville and Alice Springs. “Big Red” stands a massive 36.5m above sea level and is part of the Simpson Desert, the largest sand dune desert in the world. Climb up to the top for some magnificent desert views. The rest of the day is yours to spend at your leisure. Explore the local sights of Birdsville including the famous Birdsville Hotel, the historic hospital, the Wirrarri Visitor Information Centre, browse the market stalls or enjoy the festivities in the main street.  The races will also start in the afternoon, put on your best flip-flops and shorts and head to the Birdsville Track, one of four tracks in Queensland that run anti-clockwise. Tonight we head over to the iconic Fred Brophy’s Boxing Tent and watch all-comers taking on a troupe of boxers which have been travelling Australia for over four generations. This has become a highlight not to be missed. (Day 4 Breakfast, Birdsville Tent City overnight)

Today is the day, the 2021 Birdsville Cup. The XXXX Gold Birdsville Cup, which is said to be the Melbourne Cup of the Outback and the event everyone has been waiting for. But don’t forget to back up your favourite horse and cheer as loud as you can at the 1 mile Birdsville Cup. After the last race, catch the shuttle bus back into town and freshen up for the Monster Auction of collectables, memorabilia, vouchers and so much more. All money raised is donated to the Royal flying Doctor Service. No need to go to bed yet, there is plenty of entertainment around the area including bands, buskers and fundraising events making this an unbelievably fantastic Outback Festival for up to 7000 people. And why not join the unforgettable atmosphere of the Birdsville Pub as the night rolls on. (Day 5 Birdsville Tent City overnight)

Birdsville Tour continues to William Creek, Blinman and Clare Valley Day 6 to 8

Have a well-earned sleep in after a possibly long night or go for a walk down to the Diamantina River, if you have not had a chance prior. The Birdsville Races are done and it’s time to count your winnings or plan your budget. For lunch why not tantalise your tastebuds at the Birdsville Bakery. Try a Curry Camel Pie, Lamb Shank Pie or the traditional Beef Pie, all are homemade and deliciously good. We board our plane after lunch and fly to William Creek. On-route enjoy the views of Lake Eyre the largest salt lake of the Southern Hemisphere. No matter if Lake Eyre’s status is wet or dry, a birds eye view of the area is an incredible experience. We arrive at William Creek in time to explore the remote area or why not take an optional one-hour flight over the Painted Desert with a special remote landing. Relax and unwind in your en-suited cabin or join the locals for an ice cold beer before dinner. (Day 6 Dinner, William Creek overnight)

Back on the plane this morning for a final flight to Marree. After a few days flying above the largest sandy desert in the world, it is time to say goodbye to some truly remote and amazing country. Our bus is waiting for us and the journey takes us south to Blinman. Blinman is the highest town in South Australia sitting at 614m above sea level and the town is home to an old Copper Mine. We join an underground experience into the heart of the mine and learn about the miners and their families. Then you have time to explore the town at your own leisure before joining back together for a dinner and overnight stay at the Blinman Hotel. (Day 7 Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner, Blinman Hotel overnight)

Each time my companions also greatly enjoyed the trips and thanked me for their great holiday. Who would travel 5x, if they did not have a wonderful time and delicious fresh food ? and very good value for their money ? Ursula
