Kangaroo Island is a paradise for animal lovers, bird watchers, photographers, artists and is an absolutely must visit while in South Australia. The island is a lot bigger than many people realise and we take you on an exceptional Coorong and Kangaroo Island Tour with great wildlife encounters, unspoilt wilderness, and local produce at its best. Leave the busy Adelaide city district behind and travel 1.5 hours south to Cape Jervis located on the tip of the Fleurieu Peninsula. Take in the first coastal views and see the Cape Jervis Light which guides ships through the Backstairs Passage between the mainland and Kangaroo Island. We board the ferry to Penneshaw, and it is only a short 45-minute ferry ride before we arrive on Kangaroo Island. Enjoy lunch and a wine tasting flight at an idyllic setting surrounded by vineyards and gum trees. False Cape wines is a family run property who have built their cellar door from recycled jetty timbers, wood and locally sourced limestone. We love their sustainability philosophy incorporated in the winery, and some say their wines are the pick of the island.
Our belly full of tasty lunch and wine, we drive less than thirty-minutes to Pennington Bay. The bay features some of the best coastal views on the island. Kangaroo Island is home to the only pure strain of Ligurian Bee in the world and has remained disease free. Having a taste of the locally made honey ice cream and honeys is a delicious treat at Clifford’s Honey Farm and not to be missed. Our personal favourites are the Cup Gum and Coastal Mallee Honey. We are now on our way to Kingscote situated on the shores of beautiful Nepean Bay. With 1800 people living in Kingscote, it is the biggest town on the island. Artist Cameron Scale beautifully painted the silo of Kingscote, and we have a quick photo stop on route to our accommodation. We check into our rooms for the next 3-nights and join back together for our evening meal. Day 1 Morning Tea, Lunch, Tastings, Dinner, Kingscote Hotel overnight
Today we make our way to Seal Bay on the rugged south coast of Kangaroo Island. Seal Bay is home to a breeding colony of endangered Australian sea lions, and you can get your first glimpse at them on the easy 900-meter boardwalk. Take your time looking as some are often camouflaged or hidden right underneath the path as all this land is their natural habitat. We then join a knowledgeable park ranger on a private tour down to the beach for a more up-close experience, loads of information and fantastic photo opportunities. You can see seals snoozing in the sand, suckling their mother’s milk, playing with each other or just scratching themselves with their flippers. Back further inland we visit Raptor Domain. Listen to the successful bird rehabilitation stories during an entertaining free-flight bird presentation. Gain lots of insight into the birds’ habitats and important characteristics of each bird.
After lunch we embark on a guided tour at Emu Ridge. Emu Ridge is the only commercial Eucalyptus Distillery in South Australia. Learn about the distillery process and browse their extensive shop of oils, creams, sweets, and terrific gifts. For afternoon tea we visit Emu Bay Lavender Farm for a freshly baked lavender scones and tea. The local Emu Bay beach ranks among the most popular on the island due to its clear waters and long shoreline. Enjoy a stroll along the beach before we round up a fabulous day at the Kangaroo Island Brewery. Most if not all materials in the small batch brewery are recycled and have an amazing story. From local shearing sheds to local quarried stone the brewery is local in its build. We taste some local favourites while soaking up the warm and welcoming atmosphere. It is now time to make our way to our accommodation, a delicious dinner, and a peaceful night. Day 2 Breakfast, Lunch, Tastings, Dinner, Kingscote Hotel overnight
You would have already discovered that Kangaroo Island is the unique marriage of mouth melting flavours, pristine environment, exceptional wildlife and breathtaking scenery. Today we show you the vast wilderness and wonders of Flinders Chase National Park. One of the most iconic features are the Remarkable Rocks, a cluster of granite boulders with golden orange lichen. Walk around them, through them and take plenty of photographs before we head to Admirals Arch. Massive natural forces have formed this incredible and unusual landmark here. Observe a colony of New Zealand fur seals from the viewing platform and boardwalk around Admiral’s Arch. Part of Flinders Chase is the lighthouse station at Cape De Couedic which was established in 1909. Enjoy a walk to the lighthouse, discover the old store ruins and pulling system at Weirs Cove which are all named in the South Australian Heritage Register.
For lunch we head to Vivonne Bay. Often seen in Kangaroo Island magazines is the Vivonne Bay jetty and with the crystal clear and turquoise water around you can easily see why. Enjoy the beautiful views of the bay and discover the different plants and animals on a small walk between here and Point Ellen. Keep an eye out for a blonde short-beaked Kangaroo Island echidna. The echidnas on the island have more spines which are longer, thinner and paler in comparison to the mainland species. But of course, you can find the brunettes and redheads here too.
One of the geological features of Kangaroo Island is Little Sahara. The 2.5 square kilometre inland dune site was heritage listed in 1979. While the shapes and sizes of the sand dunes are constantly changing with the wind, the tallest and very striking dune measures around 7o metres above sea level. Instead of discovering only a small part on foot, we embark on a less strenuous and fabulous little buggy adventure taking you to places that are not accessible any other way. Sit back, listen to the history and marvel at the stunning ocean scenery, bushlands, wildlife and towering sand dunes of this privately owned property. After an incredible day full of nature, we continue our island tasting journey and we make our way to KIS, Kangaroo Island’s boutique spirit distillery. Taste some of the award-winning liqueurs or gins hand crafted with local and native ingredients such as the coastal daisy, samphire, wild rosemary bush, lemon myrtle and native juniper. From here we return to Kingscote for our third night. Day 3 Breakfast, Lunch, Tastings, Dinner, Kingscote Hotel overnight
We take the mid-morning ferry back to Cape Jervis and make our way to Victor Harbor one of South Australia’s most attractive seaside towns along the South Coast. The coast wraps around Encounter Bay which was named in 1802 by the famed navigator and mapmaker Matthew Flinders. We arrive with plenty of time to explore the local shops and a stroll across the causeway to Granite Island. Walk the Kaiki Trail exploring granite boulders, geology, and history of the island or simply enjoy the views before a ride on the horse drawn tram back to the mainland. Day 4 Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Victor Harbor Hotel overnight
Today we travel to Goolwa, the Gateway to the wetlands of the Coorong National Park and the Murray River Lake system. Onboard an Eco-Cruise we discover Coorong wildlife, wetlands, sand dunes and the Great Southern Ocean. We cruise to the Goolwa Barrage, through the lock and into the Coorong to view the mouth of the River Murray ending its 2508-kilometre journey through multiple states. We travel deep into the Coorong National Park and the mix of stunning landscape, abundance of birds, cultural insights and expert commentary is sure to provide us with an unforgettable experience. Our day includes a guided walk-through Indigenous midden sites, we participate in a smoke ceremony, and learn about the Ngarrindjeri culture from our expert guide & Indigenous ‘Kool Tours’ host. Hear about the cockle industry and flora and fauna of the region and watch the Cockle Dance or otherwise known as the Coorong Shuffle before tasting the local and freshly cooked pipis. We have lunch and afternoon tea on board the vessel as we cruise past incredible scenery of the Coorong. After a fabulous day in the Coorong National Park, we return to Adelaide by around 5.30pm. Day 5 Breakfast, Lunch, Afternoon Tea
