Flinders Ranges Tours from Adelaide to Wilpena Pound
Depart Adelaide at 7am and let us take you on a tour filled with a bucket load of highlights which have shaped the Flinders Ranges to such an excellent holiday destination. We stop for morning tea in Lochiel at Lake Bumbunga. The lake is known to change colour from pink, to white, to blue, depending on the salinity of the water throughout the year. We continue our journey to the historic railway town of Quorn. Explore the railway precinct and historic buildings. Our next stop takes us to the historic property and ruins of Kanyaka, an old cattle and sheep station established prior to the construction of the transcontinental railway line. Not far to travel we arrive in Hawker and visit the Wilpena Panorama Gallery. View Wilpena portrayed at grand scale by local artist Jeff Morgan. In addition, the gallery is home to a large collection of exceptional fossils, rocks, and minerals.
The Flinders Ranges offer an array of scenic drives and walks. This afternoon we wind our way along the Moralana Scenic Drive with new breathtaking scenery to see as we turn each corner. Surrounded by spectacular landscape with Wilpena Pound on one side and Elder Range on the other, the track takes us across dry creek beds lined with majestic Red River Gums and through Arkaba Station and Merna Mora Station country. The area is rich in colours, flora, and fauna. We arrive at Wilpena Pound Resort late afternoon. Time permitting meet at the flagpole in front of resort reception as the Adnyamathanha people welcome you to the area in Yura Ngawarla, their language. Enjoy Aboriginal songs, traditional stories, and local information as you are welcomed to Wilpena Pound Resort and the Flinders Ranges by a Yura staff member. Watch the sun set over the ranges before or after dinner tonight.

Touring in the Ikara Flinders Ranges National Park
Today we will spend a full day discovering the rugged ranges and taking in the living culture of the Ikara Flinders Ranges National Park. Get up early and take an optional scenic flight over Wilpena Pound and views of Elder Range, Lake Torrens, Edeowie Gorge, St. Mary Peak, Bunyeroo and Brachina Gorge. We then walk to the Hills Homestead located in Wilpena Pound and marvel at the views from Wangara Lookout. Plenty of photographic opportunities as we walk through the Pound Gap past Sliding Rock and indigenous artwork. We leave Wilpena and travel further north. Stops on route include the most photographed tree in the Flinders Ranges, the Cazneaux Tree and the Great Wall of China, a rocky ridge line and geological feature between Wilpena and Blinman.
Blinman is the highest town in South Australia sitting at 614m above sea level and the town is home to the historic Blinman Hotel, first opened in 1869, the old copper mine and a number of heritage-listed buildings. After our café lunch we join an underground experience into the heart of the local copper mine. The tour takes about 75 minutes and is a fantastic way to learn about the miners and their families.
On return to Wilpena Pound we stop at Stokes Hill Lookout a perfect place for late afternoon photographs. Depending on the time of the year, we stay for sunset. Enjoy spectacular 360-degree views of the Flinders Ranges including Wilpena Pound, Elder and Heysen Range. Interpretive signs and a 3D display of Wilpena Pound add to the experience at Stokes Hill. Time permitting, we drive to Old Wilpena Station which was established in 1851 and had a working life of 135 years. You will find plenty of photo opportunities here and we are only minutes away from Wilpena Pound Resort.

Brachina Gorge and Bunyeroo Valley, one of the best scenic drives in the Flinders Ranges
Watch the sunrise and witness the ranges coming to life at your own leisure this morning or just get up in time for our departure at 8.30am. We take the scenic drive through Bunyeroo Valley with its impressive views to Wilpena Pound’s Razorback Ridge and the opportunity to see euros, wedge tailed eagles, black-breasted buzzards, other birds of prey and with a bit of luck a yellow-footed rock-wallaby. Travel back in time on the Brachina Gorge Geological Drive passing through millions of years of earth and history. The colours, rock shapes and stunning scenery are truly spectacular.
Having experienced some of the best places in the Flinders Ranges we are back on the sealed road and heading for Wilmington and Melrose. Enjoy lunch at the Wilmington Hotel with a great country atmosphere. We are now on the return drive to Adelaide with a stop at the fantastic Wirrabara Silo Art and another comfort stop if required.
