Birdsville Tour departs from Adelaide, Travel to the Prairie Hotel and Marree Day 1 and 2
Depart your Adelaide accommodation by 7am and let us take you on a tour filled with wonder and delights of Iconic Outback Towns, and the excitement of the iconic Birdsville Races. We travel along the new Northern Express Way Connector passing the Port River Mangroves, the old Dry Creek Salt Fields, and Adelaide Plains Market Gardens to Lake Bumbunga in Lochiel. The lake is known to change colour from pink, to white, to blue, depending on the salinity of the water throughout the year. Enjoy morning tea and some fabulous photo opportunities. Our next stop takes us to Kanyaka, an old cattle and sheep station established prior to the construction of the transcontinental railway line. Explore the different ruins on this historic property. Not far to travel we arrive in Hawker and visit the Wilpena Panorama Gallery. View Wilpena portrayed at grand scale by local artist Jeff Morgan. In addition, the gallery is home to a large collection of exceptional fossils, rocks, and minerals.
The iconic Prairie Hotel is our destination for tonight and a great start to such an exciting Outback Holiday. The hotel was first licensed in 1876, and the current stone hotel replaced the original structure in 1905. Recent renovations include an upgrade to the restaurant and bar plus the addition of a brew house. Sit around the wine barrels set out the front of the charming sandstone building and enjoy one of the Prairie’s home-brews, the Fargher Lager beer. Check out the fossil collection and for sunset the outdoor sculptures are fantastic photo objects. For dinner we try the Prairie’s famous “feral food”, trying emu, kangaroo, camel, quandong and more. Their menu has been recognised as one of twenty “unmissable outback experiences”. (Day 1 Morning Tea, Lunch, Dinner, Prairie Hotel overnight)
After a full breakfast we drive to Beltana. The town is state heritage listed and has a population of around 35 permanent residents. Aboriginal, Afghan and Europeans cultures alike regard Beltana as a significant part in their history, and we have time to uncover some of Beltana’s stories and see historic buildings. We continue our tour to Lyndhurst and Farina. Not too many people are listed as one of their town’s visitor attractions. But then Talc Alf is a one off, a quirky and engaging outback character who has achieved near icon status. Over the past 40 years he has created an outside gallery, and we view some of Alf’s unique talc carvings in Lyndhurst. Only ten minutes away we marvel at the ochre cliffs which a meeting and trading point for the local indigenous people. The ochre colours are incredible and well worth the detour from the main track.
Marree is only a short distance away and we arrive early afternoon. Plenty of time to wander the town square for photographs. Discover the stories of the Great Northern Express, visit the Afghan Mosque and perhaps the Lake Eyre Yacht club. Hear about old Tom Kruse the outback posty, and make sure you check out the museums room in the Marree Hotel. We all join back for dinner and a briefing about the next days ahead. (Day 2 Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner, Marree Hotel overnight)
Flight to Innamincka and Birdsville Day 3
Mid-morning we fly to the small settlement of Innamincka in the north-east of South Australia. From your comfortable window seat, you can witness the endless Strzelecki Track which was named after Sir Pawel Edmund Strzelecki and shows us the way into the township of Innamincka. We have lunch at the Innamincka Hotel and there is plenty of time to explore the township at your own leisure. We depart Innamincka in the afternoon and fly north. The excitement grows as we near Birdsville, located on the banks of the Diamantina River. Settle in for a legendary event you will never forget. (Day 3 Breakfast, Lunch, Birdsville overnight)

The races start in the afternoon, put on your best flip-flops and shorts and head to the Birdsville Track, one of four tracks in Queensland that run anti clockwise. For sunset we head west out of town to the outskirts of Big Red, the first of many sand dunes when crossing the desert land between Birdsville and Alice Springs. “Big Red” stands a massive 36.5m above sea level and is part of the Simpson Desert, the largest sand dune desert in the world. Climb up to the top for some magnificent desert views. Tonight, we head over to the iconic Fred Brophy’s Boxing Tent and watch allcomers taking on a troupe of boxers which have been travelling Australia for over four generations. Birdsville Tour continues to Quorn and Clare Valley Day 6 and 7
The Birdsville Races are done and it’s time to count your winnings. We board our morning plane and fly back to Marree. Today’s flight follows the creeks and rivers of Goyder Lagoon and Channel Country all the way to the Warburton Groove at the top of North Lake Eyre. The views of Lake Eyre the largest salt lake of the Southern Hemisphere are stunning. See the different patterns and colours mother nature creates and witness wilderness, remoteness, beauty, and the enormous size of Outback South Australia that can only be seen by air. We fly over the Marree Man as we approach the Marree airfield. The modern geoglyph is etched into a remote plateau, and with its length of 4.2 kilometres and 28 kilometres circumference it is one of the biggest geoglyphs on earth. Back on the ground enjoy a good lunch at the Marree Hotel before we travel south to historic township of Quorn.
Here we visit the local Flinders Gin Distillery based in the beautifully restored 1890’s stables. Locally harvested botanicals such as quandongs, desert lime, saltbush and native muntries are some of the ingredients in the superb selection of gins. Take a gin tasting or sit back sipping on a non-alcoholic cocktail. After dinner you may like to head to the Railway Precinct to watch the Quorn Silo Light Show. For sound just tune in on the 87.6 FM radio station. (Day 6 Conti Breakfast Pack, Hotel Lunch, Dinner, Quorn overnight)
