Lake Eyre and Channel Country Tour 2022

Experience the Flood Waters in Lake Eyre and the Transformation of Channel Country to a Green Desert

Lake Eyre Tour from Adelaide including Channel Country

Flood waters and recent 2022 rain have arrived in Lake Eyre and more water is on its way. You can join our fabulous 5 Day Tour to Coober Pedy, William Creek, Lake Eyre, the Painted Desert, Marree and Leigh Creek. Many Outback Roads were closed due to the amount of water spreading in Central Australia. Towns became an island and were only accessible by air. Cyclones have brought a lot of rain to the region and more water may continue to travel down the Goyder Lagoon, the Warburton Creek and to Lake Eyre. The Outback is looking Spectacular – an incredible transformation.

Enjoy a very special Lake Eyre scenic flight from William Creek over Belt Bay and North Lake Eyre. Fly over the Warburton Groove, follow the Warburton Creek to Channel Country.

A Lake Eyre tour full of spectacular photo opportunities from the ground and from the air.

This trip has been on our bucket list for ages. From the first moment of getting on the bus we were made to feel welcome and the fellow passengers just got on so well. Rita did everything and was amazing. how great it is to see our wide barren land from the comfort of your seat on the bus. Coober Pedy underground motel was fabulous. William Creek Hotel was something you have to do. Flight over Lake Eyre and the added bonus of landing at the Painted Hills was amazing. So worried they will be destroyed by visitors who can’t keep to the tracks. An eye opener was the guy on his pushbike on the Oodnadatta Track in the middle of nowhere. Amazing value for this 5 day trip and can’t say enough good praises for Rita. Diana’s back up work was wonderful as well. A truely memorable trip.

Thank you so much for sending the photos of our great outback adventure! Marg and I really enjoyed it. The organisation of the tour was excellent. We were very impressed by your company and we really hope to do your Tasmanian tour when things improve. We have been in lockdown now for 10 weeks and we are very thankful that we had the opportunity to see your wonderful neck of the woods, when we did!
Thanks again and I hope we will meet again.

Great affordable small group tour. Standing on Lake Eyre as well as seeing it from the air was awesome. Tour guide Flick was fantastic. Nothing was too much trouble. Another highlight was Coober Pedy. Incredible. Outback touring at its best.

A last-minute decision to go and see this natural wonder for ourselves was certainly a wise one and our experience with Australia Iconic Tours, from booking in to saying goodbye, was fantastic. We couldn’t have asked for a better tour guide in Rita, who was experienced, organised and fun. We have no hesitation in recommending Australian Iconic Tours and would be happy to travel with them again, Two thumbs up from us!

We couldn’t miss the opportunity to see Lake Eyre as it filled with flood waters and Australian Iconic Tours was the perfect choice. The trip was great! Everything was sorted for you – just book, and go. Rita, our fantastic guide, was a wealth of knowledge and skill and Diana looking after the admin side of our trip was fantastic too. With Rita at the wheel we knew we were in safe hands bumping along the Oodnadatta Track in the comfort of our coach. Everything was well catered for. Meals catering for a range of likes and dietary requirements were supplied along the way. Flights over the lake was magnificent. Our take-home thermal water bottle and carry bag were an added bonus. Can’t wait to travel with Australian Iconic Tours again.

Lake Eyre Tours with Channel Country Itinerary

Tours depart from Adelaide

Depart Adelaide and travel along the new Northern Express Way Connector passing the Port River Mangroves, the old Dry Creek Salt Fields and Adelaide Plains Market Gardens to Port Wakefield for a comfort stop. From here is is only a short 20min drive to Lake Bumbunga in Lochiel. The lake is known to change colour from pink, to white, to blue, depending on the salinity of the water throughout the year. For lunch we make our way to the Arid Lands Botanical Gardens in Port Augusta. We have plenty of time to explore the wildflowers, themed gardens, and walking trails. Admire the native birds, listen to their sound and stroll past artistic outdoor sculptures.

We continue on the Explorer Highway to Woomera. Woomera was a hidden base for rocket and weapons testing, established back in 1947. It is still being used as a military testing site today. The Woomera Rocket Park is home to a number of aircrafts, missiles and other artifacts. Walk among the collection of artifacts before check in at the Eldo Hotel for our overnight stay. The hotel was once used for military accommodation and the blocks are named after former missile and rocket systems. Refresh in your room or go for an additional walk before dinner at the restaurant. (Day 1 Lunch, Dinner, Eldo Hotel overnight)

Coober Pedy – South Australia’s well-known Outback Town

After a comfortable sleep and breakfast we continue our journey further north. We stop at Lake Hart another fabulously looking salt lake. Listen to Len Beadells story as we make our way to Glendambo and Coober Pedy. Coober Pedy, which was once a rocky, dusty desert plain and is now the opal mining capital of the world. Take your first look at the unique moonscape and bizarre township as we are driving into town. Only here can you arrive with just a shirt on and leave as one of the richest people in the world! Coober Pedy is known for underground living, a moon landscape and brilliant opal.

We start with an Opal Mine tour and look at some amazing opal that has been found here. See how some of the locals lived and visit an underground church. Then we try our luck in noodling, meaning we search for opal through mullock piles. Once you have found your first shiny piece, you will understand how easy it is to get opal fever. Complete the town tour with the views of the Blower Truck and the Big Winch Lookout.

Then we head out to the Kanku- Breakaways Conservation Park for some amazing photo opportunities. Kanku – Breakaways Conservation Park is Aboriginal owned and the entire park is a registered aboriginal heritage site. We have permits to drive into the park and show off its amazing beauty. On route to our final lookout, we stop at the dog fence, a 2m high wire barrier stretching for over 5,300km across three States. Finish the day with a delicious dinner in town before retiring in your underground hotel room. (Day 2 Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Coober Pedy Lookout Cave overnight)

Lake Eyre and Channel Country Scenic Flight

This morning we travel through South Australia’s outback destined for William Creek. It is not only the smallest town of Australia, it is also situated on the largest working cattle station – Anna Creek Station. After lunch we take our stunning scenic flight over Lake Eyre. Fly over Belt Bay to the Warburton Groove and follow the creek up to Channel Country. Recent local rain and northern flood waters transform the dry outback to a blooming green desert floor. We return to Lake Eyre and Halligan Bay for another glimpse at the rare water event.

Our extended 2.5 to 3 hour Lake Eyre flight highlights all the areas that need to be seen during the 2022 flood event. After an unforgettable flight relax and unwind or join the locals for an ice cold beer at the William Creek Hotel before our group dinner. (Day 3 Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, William Creek Hotel overnight)

Painted Hills Scenic Flight with Landing, Walk on Lake Eyre, Visit Marree, Lyndhurst and Farina Station

Outback South Australia is home to some hidden treasures and today you are witnessing the Anna Creek Painted Hills. These must-see sandstone hills are a stunning outcrop in the middle of nowhere and can only be reached by air. Enjoy a fabulous morning scenic flight highlighting the wonderful colours of the area. In addition we have permission to land and explore this incredibly unique and spectacular landmark on the ground. After a 2 hour experience we land back at William Creek.

We continue our road trip and discover the scenery and lives along the Oodnadatta Track. Walk to the edge of the South Lake Eyre or enjoy the views from the information bay. Be amazed by the endless horizon and incredible nature. Back on the road we follow the Oodnadatta Track to Marree, a historic railway township. Learn about Sir Sidney Kidman, the Great Northern Express and about old Tom Kruse the outback posty.

Our next stop takes us to Farina, which was established as a railway town for passengers travelling on the Transcontinental North Line in 1878. Visit the ruins and some of the reconstructed buildings while learning about the important history. Not too many people are listed as one of their town’s visitor attractions. But then Talc Alf is a one off, a quirky and engaging outback character who has achieved near icon status. Over the past 40 years he has created an outside gallery and we will view some of Alf’s unique talc carvings in Lyndhurst. We continue our journey to Leigh Creek. Once supplying all the needs for the working families in the coal mining industry, the town has now opened up to tourism. We will stay the night and enjoy a final group dinner. (Day 4 Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Leigh Creek Outback Resort)

Leigh Creek to Adelaide via Clare Valley

Our final day has arrived and we take the scenic route back to Adelaide. We drive south through the country towns of Hawker, Eurelia, Oororoo and Jamestown. After lunch let us take you to the beautiful Clare Valley, one of the oldest wine regions in Australia. Enjoy a delicious wine tasting at one of the cellar doors before our last stretch to Adelaide. Arrive back in Adelaide by 5.30 pm. (Day 5 Breakfast, Lunch)
